How do solar cells work?

We can harness the light energy from the sun via solar cells and convert it into electricity. The amount of energy we can harness varies depending on where the solar cells are located. In Denmark, photovoltaic systems are able to convert about 20% of the energy from sunlight.

The solar cells are assembled into a panel consisting of a number of solar cells, there will typically be between 30 - 80 solar cells in a single panel.

There are different types of solar cells. The most popular are crystalline, which means both mono- and polycrystalline solar cells. There are also amorphous solar cells, such as. thin-film solar cells, typically known from a calculator.

Monocrystalline solar cells
They have only one silicon crystal, and the corners can be either square or round. They have an efficiency of up to between 20 - 23%, which is at the high end.

Polycrystalline solar cells
They have several silicon crystals and are square. More crystals in the solar cell can give the impression that the surface is a little more alive. The efficiency is slightly lower than monocrystalline solar cells.

Thin film/ amorphous solar cells
The amorphous solar cells are based on amorphous silicon. They are less efficient than crystalline solar cells and therefore cheaper. They come in several shapes and colours.

 

How efficient are solar cells?

In Denmark, solar cells are usually most efficient in the bright summer months. During this period, they will be able to convert about 20% of the sun's energy into electricity. Efficiency is greatly influenced by location. The highest efficiency will typically be achieved with south-facing panels at 45 degrees. What does it cost to get solar cells?

The average price for the purchase of a photovoltaic system and installation is around DKK 70,000 - 120,000 for a detached house with an annual electricity consumption of around 4,000 kWh, including assembly and installation. The price can vary according to size, efficiency and type.

A 6 kW solar PV system has an annual production of about 5,800 to 6,000 kWh per year. It could cover an average household's annual energy consumption, and possibly also be able to sell the excess power.

How long is the payback period for a solar PV system?

There are a number of factors that influence the payback period, but it will typically be 7 to 10 years.

An important factor in the efficiency is how much power the home uses from the solar cells. If a household battery and possibly an electric car are connected, you will be able to store the electricity for, say, the evening when your solar cells are not producing power and this will shorten the payback period significantly.

How much does a battery cost? And is it worthwhile to connect it to the system?

The price of a battery increases with its size. Expect batteries to cost from DKK 40,000 to DKK 115,000, depending on how big a battery you want (5.1 kWh to 22.1 kWh.) Often the battery is sold as part of a package price, so there is an overall discount.
